Roscoe founded Global Market Math, LLC in 1994 and is the co-fund manager of the Kudzu Fund and Kudzu Fund 3x. The funds are strictly quantitative and maintain near market neutral positions while having very low correlation to stocks, bonds, gold and other major financial asset categories.
The Kudzu Funds are directed by three meteorologists: Roscoe, wife Heidi Sonen, and co-fund manager Bob Vislocky. The three met in the Penn State Weather Center in the 1980s and shared a passion and skill at weather forecasting. They developed a keen interest in quantitative forecast models but never pondered using them in finance.
After earning an MS from Penn State, Roscoe worked as a tornado chaser, windsurfing forecaster and as a television meteorologist. His career took an unexpected turn when Heidi was trying to understand a new type of retirement plan at work known as a 401k. Despite no background in finance, Roscoe built a quantitative forecast model to trade her retirement account and found success almost immediately. By 1994, he started Global Market Math, LLC and began trading managed accounts.
In 1997, the pair sought out old friend Bob Vislocky who had finished his PhD in quantitative weather forecasting. The trio retired from all other work and focused strictly on trading with a small group of friend and family accounts. Eventually, they opened the Kudzu Fund in 2009 and Kudzu 3x in 2017.
In addition to raising a family, Roscoe enjoys skiing and dogs and the great outdoors and still loves to forecast the weather just for fun.
